Preparation of Novel Heavy Metal Flocculant MAAPAM Optimized by Response Surface Methodology

A novel heavy metal flocculant, called mercaptoacetylaminomethy-polyacrylamide(MAAPAM), was prepared through two-step reaction. Aminomethyl polyacrylamide(APAM) was first synthesized by using polyacrylamide, formaldehyde and dimethylamine, and then sulfydryl of mercaptoacetic acid(TGA) was grafted onto APAM by amidation reaction.The copper-containing water samples were investigated to determine the optimal preparation conditions for MAAPAM. The key influencing factors in the preparation of MAAPAM was confirmed by Plackett-Burman experiment, and then the steepest ascent experiment was employed to find the optimal regions of these factors. Finally, the preparation conditions of MAAPAM were optimized through response surface methodology(RSM). The results showed that the quadratic regression model established by RSM was significant while the lack of fit was not significant. The multiple correlation coefficient(R~2) was0.901 0, which demonstrated the model had good fitness. The optimum preparation conditions of MAAPAM were as follows:the concentration of APAM was 1.0%; the molar ratio of APAM and TGA was 1∶4; pH value in reaction medium was 4.9;the reaction temperature was 20℃; and the reaction time was 3.0 h. Under the optimum conditions, the removal rate of Cu(II)could reach 99.61%, which was close to the predicted value 99.08% of the model. The result proved that the optimal preparation conditions of MAAPAM established by RSM was reasonable and feasible.
