Red Soil for Sediment Capping to Control the Phosphorus Release under Flow Conditions

In this study, a 60 d dynamic circulating tank experiment was conducted to study the effects of in-situ covering of red soil(RS)on the release of phosphorus from sediments under different flow conditions. The results showed that the phosphorus which releases from the sediment was delayed, and the reduction efficiency of TP and SRP in the overlying water were 60% and 65%. The using of red soil could convert NH_4Cl-P into insoluble phosphorus, which would reduce the effects of the release of phosphorus on eutrophication of the water. The increasing of the water velocity coincided with a decrease in the nutrient release rate as a result of intensive water aeration. Therefore, the in-situ covering with red soil can control the release of phosphorus in sediments, but it's necessary to research its remediation mechanism in the future.
