Effects of Logging Residue Treatments on Carbon Storage of Second-rotation Chinese Fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) Plantation

Permanent sample plots were established in a mature first rotation Chinese fir(Cunninghamia lanceolata) plantation in Nanping,Fujian Province,China.Carbon storage of all the plots before clear felling the first rotation Chinese fir plantation was measured.Five logging residue treatments were conducted following felling.The treatments were as follows:total harvest(all aboveground organic residue including the crop trees,understory and litter was removed from the plots),whole-tree harvest(all aboveground parts of the trees removed),stem and bark harvest(only the main bole and attached bark were removed),double residue(main bole and attached bark were removed,and branches and leaves of trees from the "whole-tree harvest" treatment were applied to this treatment,residue burning("stem and bark harvest" and the residue was burned).The second-rotation Chinese fir plantation was established following the treatments.Twelve years after the treatments,carbon storage of different treatments was studied.The result showed that tree layer carbon storage of different treatments in the 12-year-old second-rotation Chinese fir plantation was observed as follows:double residue(61.03 t·hm~(-2))whole-tree harvest(57.57 t·hm~(-2))total havest(55.64 t·hm~(-2))stem and bark harvest(54.38 t·hm~(-2))residue burning(49.00 t·hm~(-2)).Soil(0~40 cm in depth) carbon storage was in the order:double residue(99.49 t·hm~(-2))whole-tree harvest(95.63 t·hm~(-2))stem and bark harvest(94.81 t·hm~(-2))total harvest(91.55 t·hm~(-2))residue burning(91.23 t·hm~(-2)).Compared to the first rotation Chinese fir plantation before felling,soil(0~40 cm) carbon storage of 12-year-old second rotation Chinese fir decreased by 0. 04 t · hm~(-2) in the total harvest treatment,and slightly increased in the rest 4 treatments total carbon storage in the ecosystem was in the order: double residue( 162. 80 t·hm~(-2)) whole-tree harvest( 155. 56 t·hm~(-2)) stem and bark harvest( 151. 24 t·hm~(-2)) total harvest( 149. 14 t·hm~(-2)) residue burning( 142. 29 t·hm~(-2)). Ecosystem total carbon storage in double residue,whole-tree harvest,stem and bark harvest,and total harvest treatments were 14. 41%,9. 33%,6. 29% and 4. 81% higher,respectively,than that of residue burning treatment. But all above differences were not significant( P 0. 05).
