Preparation of Ion Imprinted Crosslinked Chitosan and its Adsorption to Zn~(2+)

Objective To synthesize the crosslinked and ion imprinted polymer together with its application to the Zn2+ absorption.Method A Zn2+ imprinted polymer was obtained from the crosslinking of a coordination polymer of chitosan(CTS) and Zn2+ with epichlorohydrin as crosslinker followed by eluting Zn2+ using 0.5 mol/L of HCl.Results Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) and X-photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) measurements revealed that the amino groups and secondary hydroxy groups participated in the formation of chelated complex of chitosan and Zn2+ which may explain the mechanism of ion imprinting and adsoption.This ion imprinted polymer showed an adsorption capacity of 56.3 mg/g to Zn2+ in aqueous solution,double than that of unimprinted chitosan.This crosslinked chitosan was stable in water solution and weakly acidic medium and can be reused without losing adsorption capacity obviously.Conclusion The crosslinked and ion imprinted polymer is a novel and highly effective ion adsorbent.
