Effects of particle size and its distribution homogenization on the microstructure and mechanical properties of SiC/Al-30Si alloy composite

SiCp/Al-30Si composites were fabricated by vacuum hot pressing plus sintering.The microstructures of the materials were analyzed by SEM,and the tensile strength was examined.The results show that,with the increase of the SiC particle size in the composites,the clustering degree of the SiC particles decreases in the matrix,the SiC particles distribute more ununiformly.The tensile strength is influenced by the SiC particle size,the tensile strength of the composite reinforced by 13μm sized SiC particles is the highest.Fracture surface observations show that the dominant fracture mechanism of the composites is brittle fracture,the clustering bare SiC particles exist in the fracture surface of the composite reinforced by 4μm sized SiC particle;when the SiC size is 13μm,the SiC particles of the fracture surface coat with a layer of Al-Si alloy;when the SiC size is 30μm,some cracked SiC particles exist in the fracture surface with pull-out of the particles from the matrix.
