Gender on the Streets and the Nation:A Study of Shanghai Women's Day Parade(1936-1951)

YAO Fei;MA Pei;Department of History, Shanghai Normal University;
Since the International Women's Day was first commemorated in Guangzhou in 1924, Women's day has had a more than 90years' history in China. Shanghai, as a place where pioneers in the Chinese feminist movement come, has played an important role in the commemoration of International Women's Day, for having a longer duration of commemorative activities and up to four times of large-scale parades. This paper intends to present the feminist appeal in the four women's Day parades in Shanghai. Examining the process of and the public opinion after the parades, this paper shows that there are three dimensions of the Chinese women's movement:the close relationship between the national interest and the feminist appeal, the resistance of patriarchy to the feminist pursuit of rights and the class differences in women's pursuit of rights. Basing on this examination, the paper attempts to reveal the truth about the feminist movement in China.
