Female Images and Their Daily Life in Ancient China as Constructed and Expressed through Wood Block New Year Printings

Wood Block New Year Printing is a traditional folk art in China. It has a long history,a wide range of depictions in relationship to folklore and custom,and attracts public attention."Paintings of women"which were one important focus of Wood Block New Year Printings,provided precious visual images of females and their lives in ancient China. Different culture creates different images of women,especially the image of"fragile beauty. "Such images were not only the artistic expression of women being controlled in a patriarchal society but also an important way for men to look at females in ancient China,when"men and women were not allowed to see one another until their wedding day. "Therefore,studying Wood Block New Year Printings has helped us not only understand ancient women's lives but also reveal the embedded gendered power relationships.
