Effect of Foliar Application of Magnesium Sulfate on Rectification of Magnesium Deficiency in Citrus

Experiments on safe concentration,rectification effect and adding surfactant and MgSO4 synergism agent ZnO were carried out to study the effect of foliar application of MgSO4 on citrus magnesium deficiency using Mg(NO3)2 as control.Results showed that increasing concentration of MgSO4 could significantly improve the rectifying effect.The content of magnesium in leaves was nearly exponential increased in the tested concentration range:ΔMg=0.004 467 2 C2.112 98(F=72.09,P0.0001,MgSO4·7H2O concentration percent,C=2,3,4,5).The equivalent Mg2+ concentration of MgSO4 and Mg(NO3)2 had nothing to do with citrus stoma opening or closing.The effect of adding 0.33‰ surfactant and 0.1% ZnO as a synergist was not significant.Statistical analysis also showed that leave nitrogen content was not affected by the NO3-concentration when foliar application of Mg(NO3)2 to the plants with severe deficiency of magnesium and nitrogen.The increased leaf nitrogen content showed significant partial rectification with initial nitrogen content at r=-0.622 3,P=0.002 6(partial factors:NO3-,Mg2+ concentration),which meant that the lower the content of nitrogen in the controlled leaves,the more significant of nitrogen increasing.The increasing sulfur in treated leaves had no relationship with the concentration of applied SO42-,but were highly significant correlation with increased content of magnesium,r=0.646 7,P=0.000 9.The recommended concentration of foliar application of MgSO4 was less than 5% during bud and young fruit periods and less than 8% in other growing seasons,but can be increased to 10% in winter.
