ELECTROCHEMISTRY OF CORROSION IN MOLTEN SALTS

Electrochemical approach for the study of corrosion in molten salts has been described from thermodynamic as well as kinetic viewpoints,.The potential vs.pO~(2-) diagrams for Ni,Fe,Cu,Ag etc.in al- kali chloride,sulfate,carbonate and nitrate melts,Na-M-S-O phase diagrams and Solubility of oxide in molten sodium sulfate are summarized.The formulas of polarization curve fitting and correlation between corrosion current density and differential polarization resistance are discussed.It is concluded that electrochemical technique is a suitable tool for assessing the corrosion resistance of metals and for monitoring the rate of corrosion in molten salts.
