Application of non-contrast-enhanced MR angiography in hepatic arteriography

Objective:To explore the value of non-contrast-enhanced MR angiography using spatial labeling with multiple inversion pulses(SLEEK-MRA)in hepatic arteriography,and to compare the results with CT angiography(CTA).Methods:Patients(n=37)who had undergo both CTA and SLEEK-MRA exams between October 2011 and September 2016 were enrolled in this study.SLEEKMRA was performed within 7 days after completion of CTA.Images of both CTA and SLEEK-MRA were analyzed by two radiologists specialized in abdominal imaging to evaluate the image quality(fourpoint scale)and the ability of maximal visualization of hepatic artery branches.Differences between CTA and SLEEK-MRA in image quality and the ability of maximal visualization of hepatic artery branches were compared with using statistical software.Results:The inter-observer agreement between two radiologists was good to excellent(all P0.001,Kappa:CTA,0.645~0.814;SLEEK-MRA,0.633~0.877).Except for the first branches of the left and right hepatic artery,CTA and SLEEKMRA showed no statistical differences in image quality of the common hepatic artery,proper hepatic artery,left hepatic artery and right hepatic artery(all P0.05).CTA was superior to SLEEK-MRA in displaying the largest artery branches(P=0.020).Among 37 patients,there were 7 patients who had anatomical variation in hepatic arteries and 6 of them were visualized by SLEEK-MRA.Conclusion:As a noninvasive angiography method,SLEEK-MRA avoids radiation and the use of contrast agent and is a valuable approach in hepatic arteriography.
