To study the alternative treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)after TAE. Materials and methods:50 patients with unresectable HCC underwent secondary resection after TAE(Group A)and 42 patients with HCC were treated with repeated TAE only. The therapeutic results obtained in two groups were analyzed and compared. Results:The l-year,2-year cumulative survival rates of Group A were 71%and 5 0%respectively.However,the rate were 73%and 43%respectively for the patients in Group B. The differences were not statistically significant. The cumulative survival time in patients in Okuda's stage I of Group A were significantly longer than that of Group B. In contrast, the survival rate of patients in Okuda's stage I of Group A were less than that of Group B.Conclusion:These results indicate that further study was necessary to assess the value of the sec ondary surgery after TAE for unresctable HCC. This kind of treatment can not offer more favorable results in patiehts with Okuda's stage I as compared with repeated TAE.
