Surface modification of calcium carbonate and its agglomeration behaviours in water medium

To separate calcium carbonate from suspension or other substances through getting calcium carbonate particles agglomerating in the water, the behavior of calcium carbonate particles modified by the sodium stearate in water medium and its mechanism were studied. The results show that the agglomeration of particles mainly determined by the induced surface hydrophobicity. Compared with the unmodified calcium carbonate, the modified calcium carbonate particles agglomerate to larger particles with certain strength in water medium. It's inferred that the agglomeration of modified calcium carbonate particles induces by the association of modifier carbon chain on the particles surface.
