The Reaction Mechanism of Copper in Phosphorescence Analysis of Thiamine

Thiamine is not a phosphor, hut it gradually turns to the phosphor after standing in alkali medium. As a catalyst, copper may accelerate the transformation of thiamine to the oxidized form. Vigorous shaking or raise reaction temperature can enhance the phosphorescence intensity of thiamine, but reduce the phosphorescence intensity by removal of oxygen with Na2S2O4. This indicated that thiamine was oxi- dized to a phosphor. Copper also possessed the quenching property for the oxidized thiamine. Change the temperature and contact time of copper with oxidized thiamine did not affect the quenching property of copper. within proper concentration range of copper, a linear relationship between copper and phospho- rescence intensity of thiamine was obtained by the action of catalytic oxidation or quenching.
