Kinetic - Spectrophtometric Determination of Trace Mercury in Polluted Water With Amaranth Potassium-Periodate Reaction

A new kinetic spectrophotometric method for the determination of trace amounts of mercury was proposed. It is based on the fact that Hg(Ⅱ ) inhibits the discoloration of amaranth oxidized by potassium periodate and sodium oxalate as activator in sulfuric acid medium. The optimum conditions influencing the late of the reaction were examined. The method is sensitive, simple and selective. The linear range for the determination of mercury is 0.01-0. 15 mg/L. The detection Limit is 2. 0μg/L. The method has been used for the determination of trace mercury in synthetic solution and polluted water with satisfactory results.
