Sol-gel Open Tubular Mixed Alkyl Groups Columns for Capillary Electrochromatography

Sol-gel method was used for the fabrication of open tubular columns with mixed alkyl group (C 8-C 13) stationary phase for capillary electrochromatography. Following the column preparation, the electroosmotic flow behavior and the electrochromatography performance were investigated. The effect of methanol content in the mobile phase on the capacity factors of neutral aromatic solutes was studied. The result shows that the separation mechanism in C 8-C 13 OTCEC is based on reversed-phase partitioning. The separations of five aromatic solutes and four benzene derivatives were achieved on the C 8-C 13 OT-CEC column. The column efficiencies for toluene and fluroene were 180 000/m and 130 000/m, respectively. The influences of the run voltage and column inner diameter on the column efficiency were also studied. It is found that the higher voltage and the narrower column inner diameter are helpful to the improvement of the column efficiency.
