Advances in Genetic Engineering of Peanut(Arachis hypogaea L.)

The techniques of genetic transformation being applied on peanut in the last decade were reviewed.The progress on genetic engineering of peanut was summarized and its prospect was discussed by comparing the transformation efficiency and effects of transformed genes. There were mainly three systems for genetic engineering of peanut including particle bombardment of embryonic callus, Agrobacterium mediated transformation of cotyledon section, and Agrobacterium mediated transformation of apical meristems(tissue culture-independent).The targeted traits included enhancing plant resistance to virus and fungi infection and tolerance to drought and herbicide, and few were reported on reducing peanut allergens, improving oleic acid content and producing vaccines. Even though embryogenesis and Agrobacterium mediated transformation were available for some genotypes, the low efficiency of transformation, few suitable genotypes and unstable heredity of transformed genes were to be improved further to establish reliable platform of peanut genetic engineering.
