Developing New Restorer Lines with Blast-resistance Gene Pi9 for Hybrid Rice by Marker Assistance Selection(MAS)

To breed excellent disease-resistance restorer lines for hybrid rice, the cross was made with 75-1-127 with blast-resistance Pi9 gene as donor and the strong restore lines Shuhui527, Minghui86, Minhui3301 and X5 as receptors. Eventually the 6 new lines were successfully bred with blast-resistance Pi9 gene combined molecular marker assisted selection and backcross, multiple crosses with natural induced bioassay for rice blast at the reproduction area field for four consecutive years. The results indicated that there were 2 lines of blast resistance and 4 lines of middle blast resistance among the selected 6 new lines with blast-resistance gene Pi9. But the lines were blast susceptible without blast-resistance Pi9 gene, indicating that the level of blast resistance for new restorer lines with blast-resistance Pi9 gene was significantly better than that of without blast-resistance Pi9 gene lines under the same genetic background. So the selection for the progenies was effective by molecular marker. In this research, we used marker-assisted selection technology effectively to develop new rice restorer lines of resistance to rice blast.
