The Progress of the Crop Varieties DNA Fingerprint Database Construction

The three essential requirements of constructing standard crop varieties DNA fingerprinting databases(the Construction) include standard samples, core primers, and standard procedure. This article reviews the progress of the Construction in China and abroad over the past 20 years. The findings indicate that, in foreign countries, the Construction is dominated by database construction for the varieties protected by the Plant Variety Rights under the UPOV framework; while in China, the Construction mainly comprises of database construction both for the varieties protected by the Plant Variety Rights and for those examined by regional trial under the arrangement and supervision by related authorities at Ministry of Agriculture. The SSR technology is applied in most of the Construction, and the SNP technology has been adopted by a few crops such as maize, rice, and soybean. Databases constructed for maize, rice, and soybean have exceeded 3 000 in number, and maize databases amount to over 20 000. Further analysis suggests that there are four principal factors influencing the progress of the Construction for different crops: the development of molecular markers for different crops, the characteristics of different species, the urgency degree of database construction in different countries, and the level of established DNA fingerprinting databases. Last but not least, this article presents an outlook on the future crop DNA fingerprinting database construction.
