Effect of UV-C Radiation on Seed Germination and Seedling Growth of Maize

In this article, the tolerance response of maize seeds and seedlings to UV-C radiation was investigated by using UV-C to radiate the corn seeds. The results showed that the transient UV-C radiation didn't have a significant effect on the germination rate, germination index, seedling height, water content and soluble sugar of maize seeds(p0.05), but had a significant effect on the germination energy, leaf length, leaf width, fresh weight, dry weight, chlorophyll, soluble protein, relative conductivity, proline and malondialdehyde. After 5 hours radiation by UV-C, the germination energy(p0.05), leaf width(p0.05), chlorophyll content(p0.01), proline content(p0.05),relative conductivity(p0.05), and MDA content(p0.05) in the samples were significantly higher than that in the control group. After 7.5 hours radiation by UV-C, the soluble protein content(p0.05) was higher than that of the control group, and leaf length(p0.05), dry weight(p0.01), fresh weight(p0.05) in the samples were significantly lower or great significantly lower than in the control group which indicated that maize had certain tolerance to transient UV-C radiation. This research aimed to provide experimental basis for evaluating the resistance of maize to ultraviolet radiation.
