Prognostic value of measurements of hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) in esophagus variceal bleeding.

Zhu Chunlan, Tian Suli, Xu Xiaohong, Heilongjiang provincial Hospital, 150036.
Objective: We try to research the prognostic value of measurements of hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) in esophagus variceal bleeding( EBV) . Methods We measured the hepatic venous pressure gradient in 26 cirrhotic patients with a history of variceal bleeding( group 1) and 20 cirrhotic patients without a history of variceal bleeding( group 2), calculating the incidence of rebleeding in 18 months. Results The HVPG in group 1 was higher than in group 2(p 0.05). When HVPG was higher than 12 mmHg, the EVB or EVB recurrence was 73% . When HVPG was lower than 12 mmHg, the EVB was 10% . Conclusions Measurements of hepatic venous pressure gradient in cirrhotic patients provides useful information for the patients prognosis.
