A Simplified Method for Calculating Interstory Drift Capacity of Reinforced Concrete Frames Based on Weakest Plastic Hinges

To conduct rapid seismic assessment of reinforced concrete( RC) frames incorporating energy dissipative braces,a simplified method for calculating interstory drift capacity of main RC frames is proposed. The interstory drift limit state for RC frames is firstly defined. Then the weakest interstory plastic hinge is determined,based on the beam-column subassemblage failuremodes. Finally,the corresponding interstory drift capacity of RC frame is calculated. The proposed simplified calculating method for interstory drift capacity of RC frame is verified by Pushover analysis and previous RC frame cyclic tests,respectively. It shows that the interstory plastic drift capacity of a RC frame mainly depends on plastic rotation capacity of the weakest interstory plastic hinge. The proposed method can predict interstory drift capacity of RC frames with acceptable accuracy.
