Comparative Research on the Effects of Side Retainers on Transverse Seismic Response of Continuous Girder Bridges

In order to investigate the influence of side retainers on the seismic response of bridges,three bridges with different configurations of pier heights are selected as illustrative examples,and nonlinear analytical models are established taking into account of the abutment-backfill interaction,the friction effects of elastomeric bearing pads and the mechanical constitutive relationships of side retainers. By applying the time history method,the variation in seismic responses of the three illustrative bridges is compared under the cases of no retainer,elastic retainer,X-shaped steel retainer and reinforced concrete retainer. The results show that the retainer with stronger capacity of restraining superstructural displacement response brings more unfavorable effect to the substructure. The reinforced concrete retainer tends to suffer strength and stiffness degradation,and therefore has less detrimental influence on the seismic response of substructure. The retainer leads to concentration of transverse inertial force on the shorter piers of bridges with different pier heights,which brings much difficulty to the seismic design of shorter piers. When the ground motion is small,the reinforced concrete retainer exerts an effective role in controlling the superstructural displacement response while causes little harm to the bridge substructure. But when the ground motion is relatively intensive,the reinforced concrete retainer barely functions whereas the X-shaped steel retainer plays a better role in reducing the superstructural displacement response.
