Characteristics of the Evolution of Horizontal Structure of Typhoon Linfa(1510)

Using the 4-times-daily ERA-Interim reanalysis data of the ECMWF,Micaps observations and FY2 G infrared cloud imagery data from July 2—10,2015,we studied the evolution characteristics of horizontal structure of Typhoon Linfa(1510). The result is shown as follows. A southwesterly warm and moist air stream,Typhoon Chan-hom and weak cold air played important roles in the evolution of Linfa's structure. In particular,the warm and moist water vapor from the southwest(WMS) kept flowing into the typhoon to make it strong and develop its cloud system so that a compact spiral cloud system and a southern tail-shaped cloud were formed,and the convergence of water vapor and the evolution of an energy front were somewhat indicative of the typhoon structure. Chan-hom cut off the supply of the WMS to make Linfa,a weak storm,become a cyclone that was isolated and structurally symmetric. The entrainment of weak and dry cold air strengthened Linfa just offshore. As the temperature had been dropping and the weather had been cool in southern China prior to the typhoon,it is unfavorable for a squall system at its periphery over the Chinese continent to develop. With the approaching and landfall of Linfa at the coast of Shanwei,however,the squall system gradually transformed to a 6-shaped structure.
