Calibrating laser rangefinder using fiber

To ensure the accuracy and reliability of the laser rangefinder, it is necessary to calibrate it regularly. The common calibration method is to use six lines comparative law in the outdoor baseline yard of precision measurement. But this outdoor baseline yard occupies large areas of land resources, and the calibration result is affected by environmental factors such as the geological, the geography location, the ground building, the climate and the temperature, etc. Meanwhile the outdoor operation is hard. In this article, a preliminary theoretical analysis and experimental research was done by using the indoor fiber to replace the outdoor baseline yard to calibrate laser rangefinder. The principles of measurement, the selection of optic fiber types and the coupling mode were described. Furthermore, the effect of optic fiber coupling, light wave and temperature on the fiber-optic transmission was analyzed and studied. The theoretical analysis was consistent with the experimental verification. Experiment shows it is feasible to calibrate laser rangefinder by using the indoor optical fiber to replace the outdoor baseline yard.
