The Compensated Imaging for Stars by Adaptive Optics

The resolution of large telescope is limited by atmospheric turbulence etc dynamic wavefront. This had been a problem since the invention of astronomical telescope. A solving method has been provided by the adaptive optics. But for stars,since their light is limited and the spatial-temporal properties of the dynamic disturbance have put forward high requirements for the adaptive optical system, so the difficulties are large. The first experiment of adaptive optical system with 21-actuator deformable mirror was carried out on 1.2m astronomical telescope in Yunnan Observatory. The improvement for the characteristics of low-light-level object is presented.The experimental results show that the adaptive optical system can operate under the conditions when the photon counting is as low as 95 counts.The system has significant effects in reducing image spot dispersion and wandering ,improving resolution and increasing star image constrast.
