Differences in the Understanding of Doctoral Education Objectives between Academia and Industry

Liu Jian;Liu Shaoxue;
Doctors of engineering are increasingly employed by industry.In this case,to understand the demand of doctor students from the point view of industry is one of the goals of doctoral education in academia.Based on the grounded theory,this paper intends to know the differences in the understanding of doctoral education objectives between academia and industry through qualitative interviews with 14 engineering doctoral supervisors and 13 industrial enterprise employers.It is found that there is a basic consensus as to the objectives of doctoral education between academia and industry,particularly,the goal of"knowledge mastery ability";but in terms of the importance of quality structure in the education objectives,there is an obvious difference between the two groups.Therefore,when setting the the doctoral education objectives,colleges and universities should pay attention to the views of industry and to the alleviation of the differences between the two groups so as to realize the increasingly diversified comprehensive objectives of engineering doctoral education.
