Impact of Inquiry-based Lab Learning on Engineering Students' Creativity:A Case Study of an Inquiry-based Lab Course at Michigan State University

Such abilities as analyzing and solving problems,innovation and design are the professional qualities that engineering applied talents need.The current study examined the entry-level inquirybased engineering lab course offered at Michigan State University,focusing on its impact on Asian students' creativity.Based on the course survey data,the current study showed the effectiveness of the course in improving Asian students' creativity and factors that influence students' learning outcomes.Further analyses indicated that students who had hands-on experience in other courses and those who were less likely to use superficial learning during the course were more likely to benefit from inquiry-based lab learning.Results from the current research reveal that involving engineering students in solving ill-structured problems early on will help enhance their creativity and problem-solving skills in a long run.The current study serves as a model of developing engineering students' creativity and problem-solving skills through student-centered learning and institute-industry collaboration.
