Cationisation of Lyocell

A modification procedure for lyocell fibres and fabrics was developed which enables the dyeing of the cellulosic material with the help of anionic wool dyestuffs(acid and reactive dyestuffs) within short periods of time(5 min) at mild conditions(60℃, pH 4.2) homogeneously over the whole fibre cross-section. The depth of shade of the dyed fibres is determined by the degree of modification. The procedure is based on an activation of lyocell using epichlorohydrin catalysed with Zn(BF4)2 or with 0.01 M aqueous caustic soda solution. Then, the amination is performed with ethylenediamine dihydrochloride at alkaline conditions. The cationised lyocell fibres exert a staining behaviour similar to wool. No fibre damage was determined for modified lyocell, neither with regard to the tensile strength nor with regard to the handle of fabrics.
