Evapotranspiration and infiltration under different land use patterns in the regions with sodic saline soil

According to the field survey in typical regions with sodic-saline soil in west Songnen Plain in northeast China,the evapotranspiration and infiltration under two land use patterns,i.e.,the maize glebe and vegetation-uncovered land with sodic soil,are analyzed.The results show that the estimated evapotranspiration(including soil evaporation of 60.8 mm) in maize glebe was 435.2 mm during maize growing season in 2000,and it(including soil evaporation of 94.4 mm) was 494.5 mm during the same season in 1998.The rainfall infiltration into topsoil in the maize glebe was 209 mm during maize growing season in 2000,a relatively dry year,and it was 663.1 mm during the same season in 1998,a relatively wet year.The results of soil moisture budget reveal that the moisture deficiency in dry years occurs mainly in rhizosphere in maize glebe;there is enough water infiltration to prevent salinization in topsoil even in dry years.That is why soil salinization in rhizosphere in glebe becomes more serious after the land is cultivated for decades.The evapotranspiration in the vegetation-uncovered land with sodic soil has its peculiar features and is mainly controlled by rainfall events.The estimated evapotranspiration was 177.3 mm during maize growing season in 2000,and it was 303.1 mm during the same season in 1998.Since the land was uncovered with vegetation,the evapotranspiration was actually the soil evaporation.Its rainfall infiltration into topsoil was 167.9 mm during maize growing season in 2000,and it was 349.6 mm during the same season in 1998.As the vegetation is degenerated,the evaporation from topsoil is significantly increased.For example,the evaporations from the sodic soil were 3.2 times and 2.9 times of those from the maize glebe during maize growing season in 1998 and 2000 respectively.On the other hand,the infiltration is significantly decreased with vegetation degeneration.During the maize growing season in 1998 and 2000,the infiltrations of the vegetation-uncovered land with sodic soils were only 52% and 80% of those of maize glebe respectively.
