The development and improvement of drip irrigation under plastic film on cotton

The development of drip irrigation under plastic film on cotton (DIUPFC) have experienced three phases of field experiment, demonstration and extension. The irrigation system was determined by a series of research results, including of the development of high yield culture system, the establishment of multiple pipe collocation models of drip irrigation, the study of evapotranspiration characteristic and the technology of drought diagnosis. And the application of fertilizer recommending system and irrigation autocontrol system improved the management of cotton production. The positive attitude of all departments effectively motivated the development of DIUPFC. Now, there are still a lot of problems to be solved. The laws and policies concerned to water saving should be established to encourage the development of DIUPFC, especially, the adjustment of water price, and to realize the unification of social, economic and ecological effects. The technologies of irrigation and fertilization of DIUPFC should be further studied so as to increase the use efficiency of water and fertilizers.
