Water movement through the unsaturated zone in mild saline-alkali cotton field in an inland arid region: under drip irrigation schedule

Drip irrigation under matric potential control can realize water-saving irrigation and leach salt effectively. The study of transform relationship between deep soil water and groundwater is the basis for soil secondary salinization prevention. We applied drip irrigation under matric potential control in the mild saline-alkali cotton field in Karamay agricultural development area as an example to study unsaturated soil water movement based on in-situ observation. The results show that 0 ~ 150 cm is the main irrigation infiltration depth,150 ~ 250 cm is less influenced by irrigation and 250 ~ 350 cm is influenced by groundwater capillary rise. Irrigation water doesn't recharge into groundwater during the experiment period,and groundwater recharges into unsaturated zone instead. From the late blossom,early and middle boll periods,to the late boll period,the soil water recharge by groundwater is 13. 1 mm and 17. 9 mm,accounting for 6. 5% and 74. 2% of all sources of the unsaturated zone,respectively.
