Research on the Influencing Mechanism of Performance Feedback on Exploration Innovation and Exploitation Innovation

By collecting the data from 165 Chinese firms,this study integrates organizational expectation into the antecedent of exploitation and exploration innovations. Based on the theory of performance feedback,we develop the antecedent model and use the method in the domain of strategic purity to develop the innovation purity model. Further,we use hierarchical regression to examine the influencing mechanism of performance feedback on firms' innovation. Empirical results show that the difference between firms' real and expected performance significantly affects the balance between exploitation and exploration innovations. When firms' real performance is lower than its historical expectation,the expansion of their gap makes firms enhance exploration innovation intensity and weaken exploitation innovation. While when firms' real performance is higher than its social expectation,the expansion of their gap makes firms develop the opposite innovation mode. Accordingly,regardless of the difference between real and expected performance,firms always have the opportunity to develop innovative behavior,and the larger gap will more strongly affect firms' selection for such behavior.
