Research on Versions of the First Translated Western Religious Novel:Le Pauvre Horloger de Genèv

According to my survey,Le Pauvre Horloger de Genèv(《时钟表匠言行略论》,translated and published in 1829 by Samuel Kidd who was sent by the London Missionary Society to Malacca,is the first translation of a western religious novel into Chinese.The novel tells a story of two infidels,Lan(兰) and Rong(容),who were converted to Christianity after meeting a watchmaker.The novel,consisting of eight chapters without chapter-titles,was translated into Mandarin Chinese(官话).There are seven versions in three different languages: three versions in French,two in English and two in Chinese.This article shows the relationships among these versions and their similarities as well as differences.
