Traditional Rural Family Pension System and Practice in the Song Dynasty

Wang Yuesheng;Institute of Population and Labour Economics,Chinese Academy of Social Sciences;
This paper analyzes Chinese family pension system arrangement and practice in traditional agricultural society of Song dynasty.The old with children usually take son as a provider of manpower and means of subsistence.By controlling land and other property,some of the elderly with many children restrain split between married sons,to assure the wholeness of the house asset and their pension requirements.Middle and poor family with less fortune have more diverse endowment ways:the elderly dwell with a son,and other sons share life expenses;or when the life can provide for oneself,the elderly live alone,and the sons provide means of subsistence. "Each son in turn to support the elderly" is also a kind of practice.The elderly with an only child mainly live together with the son.Generally speaking,immediate family is the main family pension form.Childless elderly people have to adopt children or son- in- law,which faced many difficulties in the traditional society.Due to the concerns about offspring endowment level,some families have made special share of land for elderly parents(mainly mothers) in family separation,so that the elderly have a relatively stable disposable means of subsistence.
