Prediction of Gas Permeability through Polymer Membranes from the Chain Structure of Polymers

A Prediction technique for gas permeability from polymer structure has been developed on the basis of free volume and molar cohesive energy. It is found that the ratio of molar free volume to molar cohesive energy in a polymer calculated from group contribution controls its permeability to gases. The larger the ratio is, the larger its permeability to gases becomes. The linear equation between log(permeability) and the ratio of molar free volume to molar cohesive energy was obtained by linear regression. A number of existing polymers covering six orders of magnitude in O_2 and N_2 permeability were found to follow the epuation. As a result, the gas permeabilities become predictable from molar free volume and molar cohesive energy in a polymer which varies with its molecular structure. The advent of this method for gas permeation simplifies greatly the selection of barrier and gas separation meterials. The advantage and disadvantage of comparision in this method with others have been discussed in details.
