The Thermal Stability and Liquid Crystalline Properties of Polyphenylenebenzbisthiazole (PBT)

When PBT is dissolved in some strong acid such as methane sulfonic acid(MSA) and polyphosphoric acid(PPA), it forms liquid crystal. The thermal degradation temp. of PBT in N_2 and air measured through TGA are as high as 690℃ and 585℃ respectively. The degradation activation energy Was evaluated to be 161 kJ/mol. The depolarized light transmission temp. spectrum for the PBT/MSA liquid crystalline system was measured,and so conc. -temp. binary phase diagram was obtained, and it was found that the PBT/PPA system with the concentration of 8 wt% showed the abnormal depolarized light transmission temperature property. X-ray diffraction analysis showed the liquid crystalline structure was remined when it was casted into film. The SALS H_V pattern showed that the film casted from non-liquid crystalline has spherulite structure.
