Preparation and pH Response Characteristics of P(MMA-co-AA) Copolymer Latex

P(MMA-co-AA) copolymer latex was prepared by emulsion polymerization, using KPS as an initiator and SDS as an emulsifier.The relative viscosity of the latex and the average size and size distribution of the latex particles at different pH value were investigated.Results show that the polymerization time plays a key role in preparing stable latex with higher content of AA monomer.The latex prepared at 65 ℃ for 120 min when m(AA)/m(MMA)=12.5/100 is the most stable.The relative viscosity of latex increases and then decreases with the increasing of pH value,and latex is more sensitive to pH value when the monomer ratio of AA and MMA increases.The average size of the latex particles reduces and the particle size distribution becomes narrower as the acidic latex(pH=5.17) becomes basic(pH=8.61).
