Radiation Synthesis and Characterization of Temperature and pH-Sensitive P(NIPA/AA)/Clay IPN Hydrogel

A series of P(NIPA/AA)/clay interpenetrating polymer networks(IPN) hydrogels were prepared based on 60Co-γ-ray irradiation technique with N-isopropylacrylamide(NIPA) as temperature-sensitive monomer,acrylic acid(AA) as pH-sensitive monomer,and organic clay modifided by hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide(HTMAB) as modifying agent.The influence of clay and the concentration of AA on the equilibrium swelling ratio(SR) and compressive properties of the hydrogels were investigated.TEM images show that the surface of P(NIPA/AA) copolymer hydrogel is smooth and compact,without phase separation,and the surface and cross-section of P(NIPA/AA) IPN hydrogel are loose with macroporous structure.The surface of P(NIPA/AA) IPN hydrogel treated with pH=9.8 buffer solution is discrete and with visible phase separation because of the destruction of hydrogen bonding which certified the formation of IPN structure.In alkaline and weak alkaline solution,the rate of swelling of P(NIPA/AA) IPN hydrogel is controlled by relaxation movement of polymer chain,while in acidic solution,the rate is controlled by diffusion of small molecule.P(NIPA/AA) IPN hydrogel has good compressive properties.The compressive properties of P(NIPA/AA) IPN hydrogel with clay is better than P(NIPA/AA) IPN hydrogel.In the whole compressive process,the hydrogel is not damaged.
