Studies on the pistil morphology and early embryogenesis of Chinese plum cultivar Zuili

The morphological characteristics of pistil and embryogenesis of Chinese plum cultivar Zuili were studied for clarifying the reason of poor fruit setting with respect to reproductive biologically. Materials were dehydrated,embedded and cut in Paraffin wax. The results were as follows:The style is stuffed; two ovules are contained in the ovary; the ovule was anatropous,biteguminous and tenuinucellate. The embryo sac was staying at the 2 to 4 nucleis stage and on the 3rd day after anthesis reached to the early 8 nucleis stage. The development of the embryo sacs was of polygonum type. The first division of the zygote took place after a dormancy of 2 to 3 days. The development of endosperm conforms to the nuclear type. The primary endosperm nucleus began to divide on the 7th days after anthesis. The globular embryo stage began on 12th day after anthesis. Degeneration of nucellar cells and integument at early stage and abnormal embryo sac structure at mature stage was observed during the development of embryo.
