HE Jinxiang;Information Center of the Ministry of Land and Resources;Key Laboratory of Land and Resources Strategy Research of Ministry of Land and Resources;
NorthMet deposit,located in northeastern Minnesota,US,is one of the largest known undeveloped CuNi-Pt deposit in the world.The local people and environmental organizations are against the Northmet project because its development and operation can possibly cause an adverse impact and disruption to its surrounding environment and regional ecosystem.The government of Minnesota takes a very strict and prudent attitude toward the project's environment influential assessment activity and the process of the project's environment impact statement(EIS) lasts almost ten years. In 2016,the government of Minnesota finally confirmed the EIS for the project.The consideration and enlightenment to us brought by the process of the project review are as follows:(1)the environmental assessment work must be dealt with very seriously;(2)the environment assessment issues should be made and managed by experienced experts;(3) Balance between the economic development and environmental protection should be realized so that everyone's interest and right can be considered and protected.
