Establishment of A New Rabbit Model with Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion

Objectives: A new rabbit model with middle cerebral artery occlusion was developed.Methods: Twenty rabbits were used to generate the model of cerebral vessels,and a model of middle cerebral artery(MCA) occlusion was established in 20 rabbits by inserting fish-thread in 0.8 size into the origin of MCA.After middle cerebral artery occlusion,cerebral temperature(CT),intracranial pressure(ICP),blood pressure(BP),cerebral perfusion pressure(CPP) and central venous pressure(CVP) were monitored.Forty-eight hours later MRI scan were performed and then the animals were sacrificed.The harvested brains were stained by TTC and HE.Results: The MCA originates 4.2-4.8 cm from the originating points of the internal carotid artery(ICA).No branches was noted in up to 85% rabbits,and a branch supplying the region posterior to the ear originates from the ICA in about 15% rabbits.After occluding the MCA,uniform infarcted region was noted in the rabbits.Conclusion: An ischemic model in the region of MCA can be successfully generated in rabbits with simplicity.
