Expression of TRPC Channels in the Brain Tissues from Patients with Refractory Temporal Lobe Epilepsy

Objective: To investigate expression of cannonical transient receptor potential channels(TRPC channels) in brain tissues from patients with refractory temporal lobe epilepsy(RTLE).Methods: Twenty-seven RTLE patients and 8 age-and gender-matched controls experiencing cerebral operations for decompression or debridement were recruited for this study.Temporal lobe section was obtained from each individuals.HE staining was used to determine anatomic site and pathological changes.Immunohistochemistry staining was used to examine the expression of TRPC protein.Results:Gliosis was observed at different levels in the brain tissues from the patients.Neuronophagia and neuronal degeneration were found in some brain tissues from the patients.The expressions of TRPC1,3,4 and 5 protein were significantly up-regulated in the temporal lobe in the patients than those in the controls(P0.05 or 0.01).However,TRPC6 protein was not detected in the 2 group.Conclusion: The expression of TRPC1,3,4 and 5 were up-regulated in the temporal lobes of RTLE patients,suggesting the contribution to epileptogenesis.
