Objective: To compare the effectiveness of psychodynamic therapy with pharmacotherapy for patients with borderline personality disorder(BPD) by a randomized controlled trial. Method: Thirty BPD patients were allocated either to combined treatment group or pharmacotherapy group in a randomized controlled design. Both the two groups were given pharmacotherapy, and the combined treatment group was given additional psychodynamic therapy. All the participants were assessed by Personality Diagnostic Questionnaires(PDQ-4+) four times(before the therapy, after the therapy, 3 months and 6 months after completion of the treatment phase). Results: The PDQ-4+ scores of combined treatment group were significantly lower than those of pharmacotherapy group at the4 times(P0.001). Conclusion: The combination of psychodynamic therapy and pharmacotherapy is suitable for the BPD patients.
