The Application of Global Positioning System in Monitoring the Soundness of Bridge Structure

The highway administration department of Hongkong Special Administrative Region government has applied the Global Positioning System (GPS) to monitoring the soundness of bridge structure. The aim is to strengthen and improve the monitoring of the structural soundness of Tsing Ma Bridge, Kap Shui Mun Bridge and Ting Kau Bridge. The Global Positioning System is mainly adopted to measure the immediate displacement of the bodies and towers of the three suspension bridges, calculate the displacement of the corresponding sectional central lines as well as measure the stressing status of the main component parts. GPS is a real time monitoring system, including GPS surveying instrument, receiving station, central control station for information collection, optical fiber network as well as GPS computer system and monitors, etc. Through the introduction of the GPS monitoring system in Tsing Ma control area installed by highway administration department, this paper illustrates the application of GPS in monitoring the soundness of bridge structure. The application includes the monitoring of wind effect, temperature effect, traffic loading effect as well as the stress of main component parts through the presentation of some monitoring analyses and assessments.
