Overlapping averaging 4-frame algorithm on the measurement of the radius of curvature of a fiber optic connector end face

Radius of curvature (ROC) is one of the three most important geometric parameters for a fiber optic connector end face. To measure the ROC, an algorithm, overlapping averaging 4-frame method (OAF), was introduced. The method for calculation of wrapped phase values and surface reconstructing was theoretically analyzed, with analogue results given. The effect of shift error with a shifter on the measurement of ROC was quantitatively analyzed, with a curved surface for the relationship of ROC error and phase-shifter displacement error presented. It is indicated by the error results that, when shift error exists, the OAF algorithm has advantage over that of averaged four-step; and within the general range of calibration error and nonlinear shift error both being equal to or less than 5%, the measurement error of ROC of the fiber connector end-face through OAF is less than 7.2×10~(-5).
