Real-time testing through four-wave mixing with photorefractive materials

A degenerate four_wave mixing interferometry with the photo_refractive crystal LiNbO_3∶Fe was discussed. The interferograms included of the transmission and reflection fringes formed on the surface of the transparent plate objects tested with the interferometry were described. The contrast of the fringes changes as time going on,because of the dielectric characteristic of photorefractive crystals. Mathematic formulas to calculate the phase variations from the numbers and locations of those fringes are introduced. The experimental principle and device for real_time testing of the variations of the phases of optical transparent plate objects were presented. The experimental characteristics of the crystal were analyzed. Some quantitative results of the non_uniformities of refractive indices and thickness of a glass plate sample were given.
