The Stress Wave Propagation Characteristic of Piezoelectric Smart Aggregate Excitation for Concrete Structures

Smart Aggregate can serve as both a sensor and an actuator in the monitoring of concrete damage because its sensitive element PZT has both the positive and the inverse piezoelectric effects.This paper studied the propagation pattern of stress wave inside the concrete material.In the center position of cross-section along the length direction 8 SAs were deployed equidistantly inside a plain concrete structure.Stress wave was generated inside the concrete by both punching and applying alternating voltage on SAs separately.The study indicated that the propagation pattern of stress wave display linear decline the distance during transmitting and that the effective transmission length is not less than 3.5 m.
