Characterization of orientation structure and mechanical properties of PAN-based carbon preoxidized yarn

The polyaciylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers with different preoxidization degree were observed with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer by polarized FTIR microspectroscopy. The extend of reaction (EOR) was introduced to characterize the preoxidization degree of the samples. The infrared dichromatic ratio was used to characterize the orientation of the samples. The mechanical properties of the samples were also characterized. The results showed that PAN fiber changed greatly in chemical composition and microstructure during the process of preoxidization. The orientation degree and the mechanical properties of the fiber were decreased with the increase of EOR.
