Properties and spinning process of UHMWPE

The properties of ultrahigh-relative molecular mass polyethylene(UHMWPE) were studied.The gel spinning-ultradrawing technique was used to spin UHMWPE into UHMWPE fibers.The structure and properties of UHMWPE fibers were studied by scanning electron microscopy,wide-angle X-ray diffraction,sonic velocity method and strength test.The results showed that the physical properties,such as the relative molecular mass and partical size distribution,had a great effect on the swelling dissolution of UHMWPE and the properties of UHMWPE fibers.The fairly good properties of UHMWPE fibers can be obtained at low partical size distribution width and high swell ratio of UHMWPE.The fiber-grade UHMWPE should possess the following characteristics:intrinsic viscosity 20 -26 dL/g,average partical size 166 -185μm,partical size distribution width below 1.1, bulk density 0.41 -0.45 g/cm~3,yield strength above 20 MPa,tensile strength above 29 MPa,elastic modulus above 70 MPa, elongation at break above 32%.
