Surface modification of aramid fiber with potassium permanganate

The surface modification of aramid fiber was conducted using potassium permanganate owing to its oxidative property in strong acid.The effects of sulfuric acid concentration,potassium permanganate content,treating temperature and time on the mechanical properties of aramid fiber were discussed by orthogonal experiment.The surface morphology of untreated and treated aramid fibers was observed by scanning electron microscopy and biomicroscopy.The results showed that the optimal experimental conditions were as followed:10%sulfuric acid by mass fraction concentration,S g/L potassium permanganate,treating temperature 30℃and time 35 min.The strength loss was not great,the line etching appeared on the surface and the roughness increased after the modification.
